View Full Version : Overheating>>> liver colors?

I do ceramics and I want to add some molten glass at the bottoms of trays. The glass will crackle but that's part of the effect...

I know from glassblowing that some colors burn (there's a beautiful Reichenbach strawberry that quickly turns to liver color if you overdo it in the gloryhole).

The ceramic kiln hits 2165F for glazing.

Other than the clear reds, what colors should I avoid?

Do gold-pinks turn to liver? They don't seem to for me, but maybe the mileage differs at such high temps.

I can't answer your question, but I just saw a collection of works that were just as you describe. A thick layer of cracked glass in the bottom of ceramic vessels. If I remember right, they were made by Steve Tobin.

The gallery person told me, that he told her, that he spent some time annealing the glass so it only cracked a certain amount, and did not totally destruct.

I've seen others do it at the ceramic studio, using the standard firing schedules for glazing. They use stained glass scraps and globs, so no thought is given to COE. The ceramic teacher says the the COE of the clay from bisque to glaze firing is 106. Whatever they are doing over there seems to work... I just don't want liver!
