Where can one purchase came with a 1/4" INSIDE channel width for my homespun flat glass? I have this listed in a book, so that I know it once existed. Can one still find this product on the market?

I checked Whitemore Durgin... no luck. I'm afraid that's not a standard item at all. If I can't find came I might end up using 1/2" foil and trimming the excess, but that would be far less desirable than leading.

Planet:
Are you looking for lead which will accept glass 1/4" thick? If so, most manufacturers make "high heart" leads but most retailers don't carry it (as you're finding out).

Perhaps a nearby professional sg studio might be willing to help. I get my lead from DHD Metals which makes many styles of high heart:

http://www.dhdmetalslead.com/

Scroll down and click on any of the styles that mention high heart for a look.
They require a 50# minimum order of a single style. Very nice folks, good product.

PS: If you only need a small amount, you can increase the heart height of a lead you're already using. Let us know............

Cascade Metals in Vancouver BC makes the following with 1/4" channel:

FH26W flat 1/2" face
FH50HH flat 1/4" face
RH4HH round 7/32" face

Cascade doesn't sell retail. Victorian Art Glass retails Cascades lead for $120. in 3' length 33 lb. box. If you're in US, we can ship from Seattle WA.

First, your're welcome. Second, do I understand the question correctly that you wnat to lead glass which is 1/4" thick?
If so, the question becomes, how much do you need?

If you only need a short piece, of if you need to modify the heart height to accomodate part of a piece of glass, that can be done with "regular" lead.

If you need lots of length, find a place to buy it as you need it.

Yes, I want to blow my own flat glass, and cook some in a kiln too (that's the 6 mm, 1/4"). I will need to buy lengths of it.

Dennis, how many lengths of lead in the 1/2" and 1/4" boxes?

FH26 36 pieces
FH50 57 pieces
FH4 61 pieces

We don't carry any of these sizes in stock, nor does Cascade. It'll take approx 10 days to get some made up and shipped. It's also available in 6' lengths but I should warn that shipping 6' boxes is risky and 6' material is considerably harder to work with. There was a time when most artisans used longer lead but it's now only about 25% of the industry with the majority preferring the convenience of shorter lead.

I must know only that 25% of the industry as everyone that I know uses 6' lenghts. What's so hard about using 6' lenghts? Besides Cascade who else even makes 3' came?

DHD has 30 different high heart leads. If they do not have what you want they will custom make came to your specs, for a $375 die charge (I did this recently). They will ship 50 pound, 6' lengths via UPS.

6' is more awkward to store and carry around than 3'

I didn't realize that DHD does came to your specifications. I'll keep that in mind.

It's also much more likely to get mangled during handling and then require stretching to straighten.

3' length also means that you can only frame up to an 11" circle with 1 piece. You will need to piece togather multipule pieses to frame a typical transoms length.

Then use 6' zinc.
Even using 6' material, you can only frame up a 22" circle with 1 piece. Perhaps we should ask the came makers to produce lead in 12' lengths? Maybe even 24'?
