A lot of people have stained glass insets in their front doors, but we see that a lot.

For something more unique... is it possible to have doors built with large cast glass insets, in a northern climate?

Yes it is. I routinely make 10mm thick textured tempered panels which get tempered. The catch is making insulated glass units with them. Companies can make them, but might not give them their standard guarantee. I could use 6mm glass if I had to.

I just didn't get job where I proposed to make a large fused glass panel that I planned to resin laminate to a sheet of tempered glass, which would then be made in to an IG unit. The client didn't spring for the big bucks, so I'll have to find another one to try it out on.

What kind of big bucks would you be talking about?

The proposal was for a front doorway and sidelight system, custom made. The opening is 12' wide and 9' high. The total cost installed was $28,000. They also got a quote from JeldWen which was comparable. The main doors were double doors.

The doors were going to be made with an aluminum core covered with mahogany and then covered with Wenge. The aluminum was necessary because of the large glass size. The glass was going to have large fused glass inserts. Tekta comes in 80" sheets.

My door guy explained that most contractors plan to lose money on the front doors, and make it up on other projects. We were just doing the doors, though.

The client went with a blacksmith who offered to do 3 doors for the same price.

Twenty-eight grand is big bucks. More than five time my budget!

Fused Bullseye costs a whole lot more than kiln carved float. Email me. Creativity rules, especially for peers...
