PLASMA SCULPTURE, CRACKLE TUBES, AND MIANIATURE NEON: HOW TO LIGHT UP YOUR GLASS FOR LESS

Rick Zar

July 23-25, Fri-Sun (10am- 5pm)

$350 + $50 material fee (non-refundable)

In this class students will learn a brief history of neon, a more comprehensive history of neon/plasma art, how to construct their own basic manifold and pumping system, and the techniques needed to properly design and fill their own plasma/neon art sculpture. This class will be fun for all, from those new to the plasma arts as well as those who may want a refresher course from a unique perspective. Students will leave the class with their own plasma piece, as well as the information needed to feel confident to build and successfully operate their own pumping system at a relatively low cost. Additional materials will be available for sale during class. Intermediate to advanced level.

RICK ZAR began working with both borosilicate and lead glass in 1981, when he began working full-time for neon artist Larry Albright in Venice Beach, CA. The next eleven years were spent fabricating plasma balls, crackle tubes, miniature neon and traditional neon signage for the film and entertainment industry and for many neon/light artists of the 1980’s and early 90’s. His work can be seen in The Abyss, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Batman Forever, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek II, III, 976-EVIL, Frankenstein Unbound 2000, and Honey I Blew Up The Baby, to name just a few. His works were seen throughout the Los Angeles underground club scene from 1988-1992. He currently lives in Eugene, OR where he teaches private classes and creates neon, plasma, and kinetic sculptures. He is the brother of artist Chet Zar and the son of artist James Zar.
